Up Your Sewing Game With These Weird and Wonderful Online Sewing Creations

By | Last Updated: 4 August 2022

The online world is an odd place to say the very least but it never fails to entertain. When it comes to craft projects which involve knitting, sewing, or crochet, more often than not, garments and blankets are the go-to things, but what if you want to take things to the next level?

If you often find yourself bored creating the same designs, try looking for wacky ideas. There are a plethora of weird and wonderful creations that can be found online and learned in the comfort of your own home. All it takes is a little fabric, a lot of fun, and Bob's your uncle!

Looking for an idea to get you started? Check out what creations we found online.

Door latch covers

Ideal for anyone who’s expecting, door latch covers are often used as silencers and can be designed with a small amount of fabric and a couple of handles.

When completed, tie the sewn handles on your door handles at either side and jobs a good one. No more waking the baby when closing your door!

Reading pillow

While a lot of people tend to read from a tablet, nothing can beat reading a good book in comfort.

As one sewing enthusiast posted online, creating a reading pillow is a great way to encourage reading with your little ones, without them turning the page! All that’s required are two elasticated pieces of fabric, placed diagonally at either end of your pillow. Simply sew both ends and strap your book into place.

Snail draft excluder

This is probably by far the best creation witnessed online. Perfect to combat the increase in energy bills, sewers can take on the task of designing a space-saving draft excluder, in the shape of a snail!

Like most draft excluders, it requires stuffing to be rolled up in fabric and sewn accordingly, however, this online entrepreneur designed it to resemble a snail. Why is this so genius? Because rather than slump the draft excluder elsewhere when opening the door, you can roll it back up to resemble a snail’s shell! Genius.

Charging pockets

Online crafters have taken the practicality of pockets to the next level by cutting out old jean pockets and sewing on handles. Depending on the size and shape, these charging pockets are designed to hold your phone and charging cable while your phone is charging. An ideal space-saving solution if you’re not a fan of exposed wires around the house.

Denim kids bracelets

Instead of purchasing fabric online, why not upcycle a pair of old jeans? To design a denim bracelet, simply cut out the seams of denim jeans and place a wire through the fabric to help create its shape.

Carrots

We did say the online world is an odd place, but crafting should be creative after all.

The creation of this particular project, it’s pretty self-explanatory. As described by one Etsy designer as "quirky, fun, and unique", fabric carrots can be a great idea for Easter gifts, children’s toys, or quirky table decorations.

If carrots are too simple, there are some great examples of fabric sardines online!

Sandwich playset

Similar to carrots and sardines, why not take your creations further and crochet a sandwich playset. Designed for children, online crocheters have upped their creativity skills and designed items such as a slice of cheese, a fried egg, and even a tomato!

Reusable Christmas crackers

A quirky, sustainable option for dressing your table, reusable Christmas crackers have been described as a great go-to project for beginner sewers. All it takes is a couple of rectangular pieces of fabric that you can wrap around a cardboard roll.

All in all, a great table decoration or a little forget-me-not accessory for Christmas activities with the family.

Santa hats for chairs

Now, this is quirky. Dressing the table at Christmas can often be a dull experience if you’re trying to make things look pretty, so why not inject a bit of humor into the decor and create large Santa hats to fit over the backs of your chairs. Once the family knocks back a few sherries, who knows where they’ll end up!
