How To Make Your First Gaming PC Build a Success

By | Last Updated: 4 August 2022

Console gaming is extremely popular among gamers, with people clamouring to try the latest consoles and buy the newest games. There is something extremely accessible and easy about choosing your preferred console platform, bringing it home, and being able to basically plug in and play straight away. It is this accessibility that makes consoles so extremely popular, but they are not the only way you can get your gaming fix.

Many seasoned gamers will tell you that gaming PCs are by far the best way to enjoy your favourite games. This is due in part to the fact that you can heavily customise your PC to your preferences. Not only this, but you can continually upgrade your PC hardware and software over time to keep it running optimally. This means that you can start cheap when you’re a beginner, and as your skills improve or you have a larger budget available, you can pick and choose which aspects of your PC to upgrade.

This freedom and flexibility is only one of the reasons why PCs are so popular for gamers. Another reason why people who have already made the switch to PCs tend not to look back is because they give the player an unbeatable gaming experience. You can be assured that you’ll experience the very best graphics, extreme frame rates, and customised sound to get the absolute most out of your games. Games for PCs also tend to be cheaper than console games, even when you’re playing the exact same game.

Building a PC from scratch

You can, if you prefer, buy a complete PC build that has everything you need without having to build a PC yourself. Many beginners choose this option because they feel intimidated by the idea of building their own PC. This is a shame because you don’t need to spend a lot of time or money on learning how to build your own rig, it is surprisingly straightforward once you know the basics.

To give yourself the best chances of success you should do plenty of research before you decide on the parts you need. This information is beyond the scope of this article because there are so many thousands of component choices you’ll need to make. Essentially, you’ll need to choose a motherboard, GPU, RAM, and many more components for your gaming PC build so it’s imperative that you look into all your options.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, you will have a much better idea of how much the components with your preferred specifications will cost and you can then start to plan your budget. PC components can be very expensive, especially GPUs, and you’ll find that your budget quickly disappears. If you want to save some money you can often do this by choosing a package bundle deal that gives you a set choice of products for a reduced price when you buy them at the same time.

Once you have all your components to hand, it’s recommended that you resist opening the packaging until you are ready to start your build. This is to prevent dust and oils from your skin from contaminating your expensive components, and to make sure nothing is accidentally lost. When you’re ready to start your build you should prepare your space before doing anything else.

Choose somewhere that is dust free and give it a thorough clean before you start. Vacuum clean the floors and remove dust and lint from all the surfaces. Use a lint-free, anti-static cloth to wipe everything down and remove small dust particles and other residues. If you wish, you can use isopropyl alcohol wipes to give everything a final go over, then let the surfaces dry. The alcohol will only take a few moments to evaporate, and once it has you can get stuck in.

Open your packages and line your components up on your clean, dry surface in the order you will need them in. Make sure you also have all the tools you need and that they are clean and ready to go. Set aside half a day or so for your build, and be prepared to refer to some tutorials throughout the process to keep you on track.
